Who can imagine the terror of Adam
on the very first night of his life?
That radiant center of light in the sky
Heavens all-seeing eye
was swallowed by Eden’s treetops so high.
The blackest of night blinded his sight.
Wombless, he knew not the absence of light.
So, stumbling to a hilltop high
and shivering with fear, he uttered a cry.
The Creator heard; and threw the moon
into the void of sunless sky.
The first of men
on the first of nights
trembled, for he could only perceive
eternal dark, not Eden bright.
Therefore the Creator fashioned Eve
So, huddled together they grieved
And awaited the dawn’s dim light.
