How many ways I have seen
Jerusalem
Its ancient stones
like gold in the sun
Paintings of wailers
taken to Babylon
How many people have been
carried off
returned
Roman crucifixes rising
like towers to heaven
Paintings of angels
to protect the city
halos to light the dark
Paintings of Saracens
breaching walls
Paintings of Crusader churches
rising, burning
The Western Wall remains
rock and root of a people
