We are sure that only an epiphany will do -
That some transcendent moment is required,
That a mystical experience is prerequisite,
That a shattering wind must part a mountain,
That a terrible trembling must cleave the earth,
That a tornado must slash through town and farm,
That a tempest driven fire must consume tree and house.
Never seeing the still small voice
In hanging clothes to dry in the noonday sun,
In sweeping the walk to collect stray leaves,
In planting daffodil bulbs at full moon in winter,
In kissing a child goodnight, or at leave taking,
In the rests between notes of a Chopin Sonata,
In the calms between the ocean crests,
In the lingering light as night descends,
In holding each other before sleep, recounting the day,
In the murmuring that fills spaces between.
Still we remain certain only an epiphany will do.
